Basketball Game Preview: Mathews Mustangs vs. Cardinal Huskies

The Mathews Mustangs will wrap up 2024 with a road trip to face off against the Cardinal Huskies at 6:45 p.m. on Friday. Mathews knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past seven games -- so hopefully Cardinal likes a good challenge.

On Monday, Mathews was fully in charge, breezing past Kennedy Catholic 87-54. The Mustangs have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won five matchups by 21 points or more this season.

Meanwhile, Cardinal was not able to break out of their rough patch on Monday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They were five points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 58-53 heartbreaker at the hands of Ravenna.

Mathews' victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 6-1. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 84.0 points per game. As for Cardinal, their loss dropped their record down to 2-7.

Everything came up roses for Mathews against Cardinal in their previous meeting back in January, as the team secured a 64-37 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Mathews since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
