City of Palms: Long Beach Poly beats Omaha Central on buzzer beater

Sophomore point guard Ke'jhan Feagin provided some late-game heroics Wednesday at the prestigious City of Palms Classic, drilling a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give No. 2 Long Beach Poly (Calif.) a 52-49 victory over No. 13 Omaha Central (Neb.).

The victory sends the Jackrabbits to the semifinals, where they will face the winner of Thursday's Montverde Academy (Fla.)-Whitney Young (Chicago) matchup. It also snapped a 41-game win streak for Omaha Central, a three-time defending state champ in Nebraska.

For the second day in a row in Fort Myers, Fla., senior forward Jordan Bell came up big for Long Beach Poly. The 6-foot-7 Oregon signee piled up 17 points, 14 rebounds and eight blocked shots. USC-bound wing Roschon Prince added 14 points and eight rebounds while Feagin finished with eight points and three assists.

Omaha Central, which led by as many as seven in the third quarter, received 13 points and seven boards from Louisville-bound post Akoy Agau.



Lone Peak (Highland, Utah) 60,
Callaway (Jackson, Miss.) 42

Top-ranked Lone Peak led wire-to-wire against Mississippi's defending 5A state champ, receiving big performances from BYU-bound seniors Eric Mika and Nick Emery.

The Knights will play No. 3 Chester (Pa.) – owners of a 61-game win streak – in arguably Thursday's most highly anticipated matchup.

Mika, a rugged 6-8 forward, tallied 22 points and six rebounds. Emery, a 6-1 sharpshooter, knocked down five triples en route to 19 points to go along with four assists.

Super sophomore Malik Newman led Callaway with 17 points but shot just 5 of 17 from the field.

Lake Wales (Fla.) 74, Paul VI (Fairfax, Va.) 65

Lake Wales – Florida's defending Class 5A state champion – suffered a pair of humbling losses in recent weeks. But the Highlanders bounced back Wednesday against nationally ranked Paul VI, a program that ended storied Oak Hill Academy's (Mouth of Wilson, Va.) 56-game win streak just two weeks ago.



Senior guard Douglas Brooks led Lake Wales with 26 points. J'Quayveon Williams added 10 points and seven boards.

The loss was a stunner for Paul VI, which tied the game at 59 with just more than three minutes remaining in the contest, only to see Lake Wales tear off a 14-3 run.

Southwind (Memphis, Tenn.) 82,
Prestonwood Christian (Plano, Texas) 44

With stars Julius Randle and Mickey Mitchell sidelined by season-ending injuries, defending City of Palms champion Prestonwood Christian was viewed as a longshot to repeat.

It didn't take long for No. 5 Southwind to confirm that notion Wednesday as the Jaguars roared to a 32-8 lead in the first quarter against Prestonwood and coasted to an opening-round victory at the prestigious event.

Marquette pledge JaJuan Johnson paced Southwind with 20 points while grabbing seven boards. Future Missouri Tiger Johnathan Williams III added 18 points and eight boards.

Montverde Academy (Fla.) 79,
Bishop Verot (Fort Myers, Fla.) 35



Ranked No. 3 in the MaxPreps Academy Top 10, tournament favorite Montverde Academy eased into the second round against host school Bishop Verot.

Dakari Johnson, a 6-10 senior center, connected on all 11 field goal attempts to finish with a team-high 23 points along with 10 rebounds for Montverde Academy.

The win sets up a tantalizing matchup between elite centers as Johnson and the Eagles face 6-10 junior Jahlil Okafor and Whitney Young on Thursday in the quarterfinals.
