The Miles Bulldogs will face off against the Sonora Broncos at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Miles is coming into the matchup on a five-game losing streak.
Miles fought the good fight in their extra-innings contest against Christoval on Monday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They might be feeling deja-vu: they lost 5-4 to the Cougars, which was the same score (and result) they got the week prior.
Allyson Matheny made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-4. Another player making a difference was Laci Petrey, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-3.
Even though they lost, Miles was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .406. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Christoval only posted a batting average of .235.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Sonora). They were the clear victor by a 23-13 margin over Eldorado last Monday. Considering the Broncos have won six games by more than six runs this season, Monday's blowout was nothing new.
Valerie DeLeon was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances. She was even better at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI.
In other batting news, Tayvin Gonzales was a standout: she scored four runs and stole a base while going 4-for-5. Those four runs gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Kenzee Bryant, who scored three runs and stole a base while going 3-for-4.
Sonora's victory ended a three-game drought at home dating back to last season and bumped them up to 11-5. As for Miles, their loss dropped their record down to 4-12-1.
Tuesday's matchup will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Miles hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .465. However, it's not like Sonora struggles in that department as they've averaged .339. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
