Merritt Island (Fla.) kept up a steady attack all game long to defeat
Astronaut (Titusville, Fla.), 35-12, on Saturday.
The Mustangs were up 21-0 at the half after taking the lead on a rushing touchdown in the first quarter.
Merritt Island expanded its lead to 29 points entering the fourth quarter. MI scored two times in the third, including once on a touchdown run by
Taquan Kelly.
Joshua Studstill was the top performer for the Mustangs. The senior running back ran for two touchdowns.
Merritt Island had given up an average of 5.5 points prior to the contest. The War Eagles came in giving up 12.0 points per game this season.
MI also won the meeting between the two teams last season, 21-0.
The defeat comes as a step back for Astronaut, which notched a 13-6 victory over Jensen Beach in its previous outing. The loss snapped Astronaut's 2-game winning streak.
Astronaut (4-3) will play a 5A District 13 game against Rockledge next week, while Merritt Island (6-1) will take on Space Coast also in a 5A District 13 game.
