Softball Recap: Helix's Luck Takes a Turn for the Worse on Monday

Helix dropped their record down to 13-6 on Monday, which also ended the team's four-game streak of wins. They took a 5-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of the El Capitan Vaqueros. The Highlanders were red-hot at the plate heading into the contest (they scored no less than ten runs in the four matches prior), but the Vaqueros' pitchers proved too tough.

Helix saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Lillianna Benabdeljalil, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base.

As for El Capitan, they have been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six games. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-12 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.3 runs on average over those games.

On El Capitan's side, Makenna Burton spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered a run (which was unearned) on six hits.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Brynlie Ford, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one home run and two runs. Those two runs gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Gabrielle Garcia, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one run.

Looking ahead, Helix will take on Monte Vista at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. As for El Capitan, they will face off against West Hills at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Wolf Pack's pitching crew has only allowed four runs per game this season, so the Vaqueros' hitters will have their work cut out for them.
