Basketball Recap: Tyson Mortensen Leads a Balanced Attack to Beat Lee Williams

Coconino won the last time they faced Lee Williams and things went their way on Friday too. The Coconino Panthers secured a 54-49 W over the Lee Williams Volunteers. Given the Panthers' advantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 84th, while the Volunteers are ranked 219th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Coconino's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Tyson Mortensen led the charge by almost dropping a double-double on 13 points and nine boards. That's the most points Mortensen has posted since back in December of 2023. Jake Hanley also deserves some recognition as he posted his first block of the season.

Coconino was working as a unit and finished the game with 11 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Lee Williams only posted four assists.

Several Volunteers players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Hudson Lander, who went 6 of 10 en route to 15 points. Another player making a difference was James Coffman, who went 6 for 10 on his way to 12 points.

Coconino has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six contests, which provided a nice bump to their 13-6 record this season. As for Lee Williams, their loss was their fourth straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 6-11.

Coconino has already played their next game, a 77-55 defeat against Prescott on the 28th. Lee Williams has also already played their next matchup (against Mingus), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
