In spite of trailing
Hoke County (Raeford, N.C.) 19 points,
Scotland (Laurinburg, N.C.) surged back to grab a 34-19 win over
Hoke County (Raeford, N.C.) Saturday.
The Bucks pulled ahead on a
Detrez Newsome touchdown run, and subsequently went into halftime leading 19-7. The Fighting Scots scored the winning points with a
Jaylend Ratliffe touchdown pass to
Tra'Shawn Gregory that came in the fourth quarter.
Despite scoring seven points in the third, Scotland still trailed by 5 points going into the fourth quarter. But 20 points in the fourth helped SHS pull out the victory.
The Laurinburg school didn't take the lead for good until the the fourth quarter when Ratliffe thew a touchdown to Gregory.
Jalen McLean played well for the Fighting Scots in the victory. The senior running back ran for two touchdowns. He has now scored 11 touchdowns on the season.
Hoke County's Newsome played well. The senior running back ran for three touchdowns. His performance brought his touchdown total to 19 on the year.
Last season's game between the teams resulted in a 47-0 win for Scotland.
The loss comes after Hoke County defeated Lumberton 35-7 last week.
In a 4A Southeastern game next week Hoke County (7-2) takes on Purnell Swett, and Scotland (7-1) will go up against Lumberton also in a 4A Southeastern game.
