Softball Game Preview: Centennial Spartans vs. Burleson Elks

The Centennial Spartans will challenge the Burleson Elks at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Centennial 2.8, Burleson 3.3) so any runs scored will be well earned.

Centennial had been on a four-game streak of scoring at least ten runs, but Grandview put an end to it on Saturday. Centennial came up short against Grandview, falling 7-0. The game marked the first time this year in which the Spartans were not able to get on the board.

Centennial saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Madison Haynes, who went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases. That's the most stolen bases Haynes has posted since back in March of 2024.

Meanwhile, Burleson had already won four in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 8.3 runs) and they went ahead and made it five last Friday. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Cougars a 7-0 shutout. The Elks might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won five matchups by six runs or more this season.

Seguin's batters probably weren't too happy with Ryan Hovland, who pitched a no hitter and racked up 14 Ks (she gave up zero walks).

On the hitting side, Addy Sellers was incredible, firing off two home runs and three RBI while going 2-for-3. The team also got some help courtesy of Kealy Custead, who went 1-for-3 with two runs and one triple.

Burleson pushed their record up to 8-4 with the victory, which was their third straight at home. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. As for Centennial, they moved to 14-6 with that defeat, which also ended their four-game winning streak.

Everything went Centennial's way against Burleson when the teams last played back in March of 2024, as Centennial made off with a 10-0 victory. Does Centennial have another victory up their sleeve, or will Burleson turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
