Recap: Brush Beetdiggers vs. Weld Central Rebels
This season hasn't been kind to the Brush Beetdiggers, who are still winless after their fifth matchup. They took a 60-52 hit to the loss column at the hands of Weld Central on Saturday. While losing is never fun, Brush can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 304th, while Weld Central is ranked 139th).
Several Beetdiggers players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Edgar Ortiz, who scored 16 points along with seven rebounds. Those seven rebounds set a new season-high mark for him. Sawyer Albert was another key contributor, scoring 11 points along with seven rebounds.
Even though they lost, Brush were working as a unit and finished the game with 13 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.
Leading Weld Central to victory were Tyler Branch and Dylan Pevler. Branch scored 18 points, while Pevler scored 18 points. The match was Branch's third in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Jace Cornelius, who scored eight points.
Brush's loss was their fourth straight on the road dating back to last season, which bumped their record down to 0-5. As for Weld Central, the win makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 2-1.
Brush will be playing at home against Y at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Y knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past three games -- so hopefully Brush likes a good challenge. Weld Central and Monte Vista will face off at 3:30 p.m. on December 14th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday.
