Preview: Calvary Christian Academy Eagles vs. Gulliver Prep Raiders
The Calvary Christian Academy Eagles will head out on the road to face off against the Gulliver Prep Raiders at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Calvary Christian Academy will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Florida Rankings (they are ranked 371st, while Gulliver Prep is ranked 170th).
Last Monday, Calvary Christian Academy came up short against Boca Raton Christian and fell 56-48. Calvary Christian Academy has now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Despite their loss, Calvary Christian Academy saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Taryn Wakefield, who scored 14 points, was perhaps the best of all. The match was Wakefield's sixth in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Brianna Staples, who scored 12 points.
Meanwhile, Gulliver Prep beat TERRA Environmental 49-38 on Tuesday. The victory made it back-to-back wins for Gulliver Prep.
Gulliver Prep's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Nicole Quevedo, who scored 17 points along with six steals. Those six steals set a new season-high mark for Quevedo. The team also got some help courtesy of Caitlen Dauphin, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and 12 rebounds.
Calvary Christian Academy's defeat dropped their record down to 3-3. As for Gulliver Prep, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests, which provided a nice bump to their 4-2 record this season.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Calvary Christian Academy have been smashing the glass this season, having only averaged 29.7 rebounds per game. It's a different story for Gulliver Prep, though, as they've been averaging only 27.3 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Calvary Christian Academy came up short against Gulliver Prep in their previous matchup back in January, falling 34-24. Can Calvary Christian Academy avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
