Baseball Game Preview: SouthWest Edgecombe Cougars vs. Ayden - Grifton Chargers

The SouthWest Edgecombe Cougars will head out to take on the Ayden - Grifton Chargers at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Considering both teams were shutout in their prior games, the pair is probably coming into this one with something to prove.

Friday just wasn't the day for SouthWest Edgecombe's offense. They came up short against Cardinal Gibbons on Friday, falling 8-0. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest defeat the Cougars have suffered since March 12, 2024.

Connor Wolfe was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits over 4.2 innings pitched. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two hits in three consecutive appearances.

At the plate, SouthWest Edgecombe saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Tyson Ayers, who went 2-for-3 with one double.

Meanwhile, Saturday just wasn't the day for Ayden - Grifton's offense. They lost 11-0 to Corinth Holders on Saturday. Having soared to a lofty 14 runs in the game before, the Chargers' shutout was a dramatic turnaround.

SouthWest Edgecombe moved to 10-2 with that loss, which also ended their five-game winning streak. As for Ayden - Grifton, with the defeat, they broke their five-game winning streak and moved their record to 11-4.

SouthWest Edgecombe came out on top in a nail-biter against Ayden - Grifton when the teams last played back in April of 2024, sneaking past 4-2. Will the Cougars repeat their success, or do the Chargers have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
