Softball Recap: Academy of the New Church Takes a Loss

Academy of the New Church dropped their record down to 10-4 on Friday, which also ended the team's three-game streak of wins. They fell just short of Lower Moreland by a score of 7-6. The result was an unpleasant reminder to Academy of the New Church of the 7-3 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in March of 2023.

Olivia Schriver was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and one double.

As for Lower Moreland, they are on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matchups. That's provided a massive bump to their 6-9 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.6 runs on average over those games.

On Lower Moreland's side, Maddie Menchhofer made a splash no matter where she played. She pitched three innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off two hits. Menchhofer has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in ten consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-2 with two RBI, one run, and one double.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Molly Weber, who went 2-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base. That home run was her first of the season. Jordyn MacPhee was another key player, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.

Academy of the New Church does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Lower Moreland, they will face off against Collegium Charter at 3:45 p.m. on Monday. The Cougar have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 13.63 runs per game on average), something the Lions will no doubt try to take advantage of.
