Baseball Recap: Wesson Comes Up Short

Wesson entered their game against Loyd Star on Monday without any home losses, but there's a first time for everything. The Wesson Cobras fell just short of the Loyd Star Hornets by a score of 14-12. If the Cobras were looking for revenge after losing 14-3 to the Hornets when the teams met back in February of 2023, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Cooper Neeley put in work no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances. He was even better at the plate, scoring a run while going 4-for-6. The dominant performance gave him a new career-high in hits.

In other batting news, Aiden Wallace stepped up to lead a balanced group of hitters: he scored three runs and stole a base while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances. That stolen base was his first of the season. Another player making a difference was Jack Wilson, who scored two runs while going 1-for-5.

Even though they lost, Wesson kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Loyd Star only managed six hits.

Wesson is on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 4-4. Those losses can't be blamed on the team's hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.3 runs over those games. As for Loyd Star, they now have a winning record of 4-3.

Coming up, Wesson will challenge Natchez at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Loyd Star, they will take on Lawrence County at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.
