Football Recap: Oil City Oilers vs. Grove City Eagles

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Oil City). They strolled past the Grove City Eagles with points to spare on Friday, taking the game 35-21. Oil City's win was all the more impressive since the Eagles were averaging only 17.5 points allowed on the season.

Oil City's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was De?Vaughn Griffin, who picked up 122 receiving yards and two touchdowns, and also rushed for 59 yards and a touchdown on only five carries. That's the most rushing yards Griffin has posted since back in August of 2023. Shia Sanchez was another key back, rushing for 124 yards and two touchdowns.

Oil City's defense was in the mix too, especially the secondary: they snagged two passes before it was all said and done. The picks came courtesy of Steven Heise and Cole Findlay. Heise also snagged an interception, which is notable because Oil City is 2-1 when he posts at least one interception, but 1-2 otherwise.

Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, Oil City was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 263 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've managed all season.

Grove City's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Nathan Greer, who picked up 110 receiving yards and a touchdown, and Jaxyn Wilson, who rushed for 44 yards and a touchdown. Greer also put in work on the defensive side of the ball, making five total tackles and defending a pass in addition to snagging an interception.

The win got Oil City back to even at 3-3. As for Grove City, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost three of their last four contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-3 record this season.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Oil City will challenge Erie at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Erie will be hoping to continue their three-game streak of scoring more points each match than the last. As for Grove City, they will square off against Sharon at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The two teams have allowed few points on average, (Sharon: 13.5, Grove City: 17.5) so any points scored will be well earned.
