Basketball Recap: Charles Walker's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Cornerstone Charter over Piedmont Classical

It was a proper cat-fight when Cornerstone Charter challenged Piedmont Classical on Wednesday. The Cornerstone Charter Cardinals fell 61-49 to the Piedmont Classical Bobcats. The Cardinals have struggled against the Bobcats recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive lost matchup.

Cornerstone Charter's defeat came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Charles Walker, who went 7-for-9 on his way to 16 points. The dominant performance also gave Walker a new career-high in shooting accuracy (78%). Tyler Smith was another key player, dropping a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds.

Piedmont Classical's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Christian Daye led the charge by going 9-for-18 to rack up 20 points along with eight steals and five assists. Piedmont Classical is 2-1 when Daye posts five or more steals, but 6-11 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Bryson Motley, who posted 12 points in addition to five assists and five steals.

Cornerstone Charter's record now sits at 12-12. As for Piedmont Classical, their victory bumped their record up to 8-12.

Coming up, Cornerstone Charter will head out to take on College Prep & Leadership Academy at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. College Prep & Leadership Academy knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past 12 matches -- so hopefully Cornerstone Charter likes a good challenge. As for Piedmont Classical, they wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 53-29 win against Triad Math and Science Academy on the 13th.
