Softball Recap: Culver Community Takes a Loss

Culver Community had lost three straight at home, but on Wednesday they dropped their record down to 7-7 to make it four. They fell 4-1 to the Westville Blackhawks. The matchup marked the Cavaliers' lowest-scoring game so far this season.

Gracie Milam made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-3 with one home run and one double.

As for Westville, the victory was the third in a row for them, bringing their record up to 6-1. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.3 runs on average over those games.

On Westville's side, Kierstin Vargas made a splash while hitting and pitching. She struck out 12 batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits (and only one walk). Vargas has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-4 with one home run. That home run marked the first that she has launched this season.

Vargas wasn't the only one making solid contact as three players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Kiersten Vaughan, who went 2-for-4 with one run and one double. Another was Lily Green, who went 1-for-3 with two RBI and one double.

Looking ahead, Culver Community will challenge Elkhart Christian Academy at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Eagles have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 11.4 runs per game on average), something the Cavaliers will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Westville, they will take on Hammond Central at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday. The Wolves have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 15.42 runs per game on average), something the Blackhawks will no doubt try to take advantage of.
