Basketball Recap: Morgan Ortega Leads a Balanced Attack to Beat Montezuma-Cortez

Alamosa won the last time they faced Montezuma-Cortez and things went their way on Saturday too. The Alamosa Mean Moose were the clear victor by a 46-25 margin over the Montezuma-Cortez Panthers. The Mean Moose have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won ten matches by 20 points or more this season.

Alamosa got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Morgan Ortega out in front who posted 12 points and six assists. What's more, Ortega also racked up two blocks, the most she's had since back in December of 2024. Another player making a difference was Jaelin Garcia, who went 5-for-7 on her way to 10 points and five boards.

Montezuma-Cortez's loss came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Shoshawna Washburn, who earned four points. Keeley Clarke also deserves some recognition as she posted her first block of the season.

Alamosa is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven contests, which provided a nice bump to their 14-5 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 26.7 points over those games. As for Montezuma-Cortez, they have been struggling recently as they've lost nine of their last ten games, which has put a noticeable dent in their 4-13 record this season.

Alamosa wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next matchup, a 41-39 victory against Monte Vista on the 11th. As for Montezuma-Cortez, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 77-37 win against Mancos on the 11th.
