Preview: Mayfield Trojans vs. Las Cruces Bulldawgs
Mayfield is 0-10 against Las Cruces since February of 2019 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Tuesday. The Mayfield Trojans will head out on the road to square off against the Las Cruces Bulldawgs at 7:00 p.m. Mayfield will be strutting in after a victory while Las Cruces will be coming in after a loss.
Mayfield had to endure a four-game losing streak, but that streak is no more. They really took it to Deming for the full four quarters, racking up a 60-28 victory on the road. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest victory Mayfield has posted yet this season.
Mayfield got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Brian Coyle Jr out in front who scored 11 points along with five rebounds and three steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Ruben Rivera, who scored 15 points.
Las Cruces suffered their biggest loss yet this season on Saturday. They had to suffer through a rough 73-27 loss at the hands of Volcano Vista. While losing is never fun, Las Cruces can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' New Mexico basketball rankings (they are ranked 34th, while Volcano Vista is ranked first).
Mayfield's win bumped their record up to 5-10. As for Las Cruces, they now have a losing record at 7-8.
Mayfield ended up a good deal behind Las Cruces when the teams last played back in February of 2023, losing 64-49. Can Mayfield avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
