Basketball Recap: Chatham Comes Up Short

Chatham played a tough match on Tuesday in which they were outscored in every quarter. They came up short against the Nelson County Governors, falling 83-59. Even though they lost, the Cavaliers' still made a splash on offense and bumped their average scoring up to 50.4 points per game (they're now ranked -1th in scoring overall).

When it comes to explaining why Chatham lost, don't look at Amare Word. Despite the final result, he went 8 of 20 on his way to 23 points and five boards. Brenden Hedrick was another key player, putting up 12 points and five rebounds.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Nelson County to victory, but perhaps none more so than Jack Winter, who went 7 for 12 en route to 21 points along with seven boards and six assists. Winter has been hot recently, having also posted three or more steals the last three times he's played. Another player making a difference was Colton Ward, who dropped a double-double on 28 points and 14 rebounds.

Chatham has been struggling recently as they've lost five of their last six games, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-9 record this season. That patch can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 53.8 points per game. As for Nelson County, their win was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 11-4.

Chatham has already played their next contest, a 62-47 victory against Patrick County on the 3rd. As for Nelson County, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, an 80-38 win against William Campbell on the 31st.
