Basketball Recap: Saturday's Defeat Ends Mayfield's Winning Streak

After a string of four wins, Mayfield's good fortune finally ran out on Saturday. They fell 66-57 to the Oppenheim-Ephratah-St. Johnsville Wolves. Sadly, that's the second time they've come up short against the Panthers this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 55-35 back in December of 2024.

Despite the loss, Mayfield saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Abigail Powers dropped a double-double on 19 points and 13 rebounds. The dominant performance gave Powers a new career-high in boards. Another player making a difference was Madison Case, who posted six points and eight rebounds.

Even though they lost, Mayfield smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in five consecutive matchups.

Mayfield's defeat dropped their record down to 9-7. As for Oppenheim-Ephratah-St. Johnsville, the win (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 12-3.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Mayfield will face off against Berne-Knox-Westerlo at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Oppenheim-Ephratah-St. Johnsville, they and Cobleskill-Richmondville will meet in a dog eat dog contest at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
