Baseball Recap: Waggener Comes Up Short

It was a proper cat-fight when Waggener took on W.E.B. DuBois Academy on Thursday. The Wildcats took a 12-8 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Lions. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Wildcats of the 25-5 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in April of 2025.

Brayan Yariel was cooking despite his team's loss, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with four stolen bases and three runs. Another player making a difference was Sims Smith, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one stolen base and one RBI.

This is the second loss in a row for Waggener and nudges their season record down to 2-8. Those losses can't be blamed on the team's hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.5 runs over those games. As for W.E.B. DuBois Academy, the victory got them back to even at 2-2.

Coming up, Waggener will challenge Seneca at 9:45 a.m. on Saturday. As for W.E.B. DuBois Academy, they will head out on the road to challenge Jeffersontown at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The last three games the Chargers have played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.
