McCallie starts No. 1, but imposes self-quarantine after players test positive for COVID.

High school football returns to the Volunteer State next week as the 2020 season kicks off despite questions whether the top-ranked team in the state will begin the season on time.

Defending state champions McCallie begin the season at No. 1 in the state, but plenty of uncertainty surrounds the start of their season after reports that at least 11 players had tested positive for COVID-19. The Blue Tornado are currently in a two-week quarantine period, but plan to begin their season Aug. 28 against Webb.

Maryville starts at No. 2 in the state as the defending Division I Class 6A champions ride a 15-game winning streak into the 2020 season.

Elizabethton also carries a 15-game winning streak into the new year, as the defending Division I Class 4A state champions begin the season at No. 7 in the state.
