Softball Game Preview: Hondo Owls vs. Crystal City Javelinas

The Hondo Owls will head out on the road to square off against the Crystal City Javelinas at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Hondo is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.7 runs per game this season.

Hondo took a loss when they played away from home on Tuesday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Friday. Everything went their way against Dilley as Hondo made off with a 9-3 win. The Owls haven't had any issues with the Wolves recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive victory against them.

Rebecca Rubio spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and two unearned) runs on eight hits and racked up eight Ks. Those hits marked the first that she allowed this season.

On the hitting side, Ainsley Bohlen was incredible, scoring two runs while going 3-for-4. Another player making a difference was Xevi Hernandez, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-4.

Bohlen wasn't the only one working in the hit department: Hondo kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That's a new trend for Hondo: they were averaging 5 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 games they've averaged 8.8.

Meanwhile, Friday just wasn't the day for Crystal City's offense. They came up short against Natalia on Friday, falling 14-0. The Javelinas have struggled against the Mustangs recently, as the game was their sixth consecutive lost meeting.

Crystal City's defeat dropped their record down to 2-5. As for Hondo, they now have a winning record of 8-7.

Everything went Hondo's way against Crystal City in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, as Hondo made off with a 10-0 win. Does Hondo have another victory up their sleeve, or will Crystal City turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
