Baseball Recap: Putnam Valley Takes Down Hastings in a Playoff Battle

It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but Putnam Valley had no problem doing just that on Saturday. They didn't even let the Hastings Yellow Jackets on the board, marking their second-straight 10-0 shutout. Considering the Tigers have won 14 games by more than six runs this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.

Putnam Valley got a great performance from Dominic Benedetto as he kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out nine over five innings pitched. Benedetto has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in four consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Putnam Valley let Aaron Pierre and Nick Mazzola run wild. Pierre went 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double, while Mazzola went 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. That's the most hits Mazzola has posted since May 2nd. Jay Constantino was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.

Putnam Valley always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .548. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Hastings only posted an OBP of .211.

Putnam Valley's victory was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 19-4. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.8 runs on average over those games. As for Hastings, their defeat dropped their record down to 14-11.

As of now, neither Putnam Valley nor the Yellow Jackets have any future games scheduled.
