Blythewood is a perfect 3-0 against Sumter since March of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Tuesday. The Bengals will venture away from home to square off against the Gamecocks at 5:00 p.m. Blythewood's pitching crew has only allowed 3.7 runs per game this season, so Sumter's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
Blythewood's usually-dominant pitching crew will be looking to make up for Tuesday's struggle, when West Florence hitters got past them. The Bengals might be feeling deja-vu: they lost 10-0 to the Knights, which was the same score (and result) they got the week prior. The Bengals have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Meanwhile, Sumter hadn't done well against East Clarendon recently (they were 0-6 in their previous six matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. The Gamecocks put the hurt on the Wolverines with a sharp 10-0 victory. Winning may never get old, but the Gamecocks sure are getting used to it with their third in a row.
Lillie Ivey tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only one hit while striking out eight over five innings pitched. She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Sydney Rhodes and Hannah DuRant did most of the damage at the plate: Rhodes went 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI, while DuRant scored two runs while going 3-for-4. That's the most hits Rhodes has posted since back in March. Ariana Evans was another key player, scoring a run and stealing two bases while going 2-for-3.
Sumter kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 16 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.
Sumter pushed their record up to 11-5-1 with the win, which was their sixth straight at home. Those home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.0 runs over those games. As for Blythewood, their defeat dropped their record down to 14-4.
Blythewood was able to grind out a solid win over Sumter when the teams last played back in February of 2022, winning 7-2. Will the Bengals repeat their success, or do the Gamecocks have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
