Cleveland Central and Vicksburg are an even 3-3 against one another since October of 2017, but not for long. The Wolves will be playing in front of their home fans against the Gators at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. That contest will pit two of the most dominant backs against one another: Anthony Stephens Jr and Jadarius Henderson.
Things were looking good for Cleveland Central after they put the first points on the board on Friday, but unfortunately for them things went downhill from there. They fell just short of Florence by a score of 21-18. Despite 121 more yards than the Eagles, the Wolves couldn't convert that extra yardage to scores.
Cleveland Central's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Kyle Mitchell, who rushed for 92 yards, and Christopher Watkins, who threw for 182 yards and one TD on only 15 passes. Mitchell's longest rush was for an impressive 68 yards, which helps to explain his lofty yards per carry total.
Don't try to pin the team's loss on the defense: they kept the trenches locked down and allowed a mere 2.7 yards per carry. While two picked up at least five total tackles, Orhyon Burnice stood above the rest. He picked up two sacks and made five total tackles (3.0 for loss). Cleveland Central's ground attack was stronger, having averaged 4.4.
Cleveland Central's defense didn't let Kayne Ashley, get away unscathed either: they got into the backfield for three sacks. In that department, Burnice was the leader with two.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Vicksburg). They really took it to Provine for the full four quarters, racking up a 55-6 victory. The win was familiar territory for the Gators, who have now won three games in a row.
Cleveland Central better keep an eye on Jermaine Gaines Jr. He was instrumental in Vicksburg's win, rushing for 118 yards and a pair of touchdowns on only ten carries.
Cleveland Central's loss dropped their record down to 3-3. As for Vicksburg, their victory bumped their record up to 5-2.
Friday's matchup might be decided on the ground. Cleveland Central has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 200.2 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Vicksburg struggles in that department as they've been averaging 169 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's contest turns into a tough fight on the ground.
