A strong spring season vaulted Bentonville (Ark.) into the No. 1 position in the final MaxPreps Cup standings, which recognizes the best overall high school sports program in the country.

In 10th place in the Cup standings after the winter sports season, Bentonville added state titles in boys and girls track, and boys and girls soccer along with a second-place state finish in softball and boys golf. The school finished with a total of 1,120 points, based on the MaxPreps Cup formula.

Bentonville finished just ahead of St. Pius X Catholic (Atlanta) and Punahou (Honolulu), which battled in a close race for second. St. Pius X Catholic edged out Punahou by just five points, 985 to 980 in the point standings. St. Pius X Catholic finished the year with eight state championships while Punahou had a national-best 11 state championships in 2013-14.

St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) finished in fourth with 967 points and six state titles while another Georgia school, Marist (Atlanta), finished in fifth with 918 points and eight state titles.

MaxPreps Cup rankings are compiled by giving schools points for finishing first or second at the state level. For states that don't have state competition, point totals were adjusted to award first and second-place teams at the section level. Points were also awarded for size of playoff division (championships won at the large-school level were worth more than championships at the small-school level), size of state (championships for Texas, for example, were worth more than championships for less-populous states like Alaska) and type of sport (football championships were worth more than tennis championships).

National rankings were also included in the tabulation of points. The MaxPreps Computer Rankings for soccer, lacrosse and boys volleyball were utilized, while the Xcellent 25 Rankings were used for boys and girls basketball, football,  baseball, softball and girls volleyball. Dyestat's national rankings for cross country and track and field were also utilized along with The Mat's rankings for wrestling. Not all sports contested at the state level are included in the MaxPreps Cup standings.
