MaxPreps 2012 Volleyball Small Schools All-American teams

Marina Rose of Coventry (Conn.) is the Small Schools Player of the Year. Coach of the Year and Team of the Year honors go to Warner High of South Dakota.

Marina Rose, a senior defensive specialist from Coventry (Conn.), is the MaxPreps Small Schools High School Player of the Year.

Rose, who is a three-time Gatorade State Player of the Year nominee, led Coventry to its seventh-straight state title. Coventry finished the season 24-0 and has a win streak of 76 straight matches.

Rose, who at 5-foot-9 played all over the court, had several impressive statistics, including a 78.9 percent kill percentage that led all high school volleyball players in 2012. She committed only seven service receive errors in 307 chances, and also had 409 digs and 92 aces with a 95 percent serving percentage.

With Rose leading the way, the Patriots needed less than one hour to defeat Holy Cross (Waterbury, Conn.) 3-0 (25-7, 25-12, 25-8) to win the 2012 Class S state championship. Rose was named Tournament MVP as she registered 13 kills and 13 digs against Holy Cross.



The Patriots lost only two games all season. Rose lost just one match in her four seasons at Coventry - in 2009.

The straight-A student will play volleyball at Providence.

Other Player of the Year nominees included Sara Sponcil  from Veritas Prep (Phoenix), Gabby Deshotel of Bayside Academy (Daphne, Ala.), Amanda McKinzie of St. Philip (Battle Creek, Mich.) and Sarah Wallace of Ross (Branson, Calif.).

The Coach of the Year this season is Kari Jung of Warner (S.D.). In her six seasons at Warner, Jung has compiled a 183-10 record, but the 2012 season was her first unbeaten team as the Monarchs went 34-0 and captured the state's Class B championship.

Warner is also the Small Schools Team of the Year, led by senior Rachel Rogers, junior Carly Rozell and sophomore Ashley Rozell. Warner won all 90 games it played this season in completing a 34-0 season.

MB/MH - Syretha Pride, Madison County (Gurley, Ala.), 5-8 Senior

Pride led Madison to a 72-6 record and the Alabama 4A state title. Pride recorded 907 kills, 51 aces (418 service points, 96 percent), 307 blocks and 375 digs. She will attend Wallace State CC.



MH/MB - Gabby Deshotel, Bayside Academy (Daphne, Ala.), 6-0 Senior
Deshotel, who has played on five straight state title teams, helped the Admirals run their streak of state titles to 11 in 2012. She finished her career with 2,405 kills, 1,054 blocks, 237 aces and 408 digs. Bayside finished the season 62-2 and with a 60-match winning streak. Deshotel will play at the University of Alabama/Birmingham.

MH/OH - Tayler Soucie, Osawatomie (Kan.), 6-1 Senior
Soucie led Osawatomie to a 30-9 record. She finished the season with 779 kills, 398 digs, 139 blocks, 62 service aces (97.2 percent on 318 serves) and 34 assists. Soucie had one reception error in 303 service receptions. She will play at the University of Kansas.

MH - Scottie Ingram, Eastern Greene (Bloomfield, Ind.), 5-9 Senior
Ingram led Eastern to a 36-3 record and state runner-up finish. She had 649 kills, 422 serves with 39 aces, 546 digs and 141 blocks (96 solo).

OH - Amanda McKinzie, St. Philip Catholic Central (Battle Creek, Mich.), 5-10 Senior
McKinzie recorded 576 kills, 111 aces, 41 blocks, 375 digs and 408 serve receptions while leading St. Philip to its seventh-straight Class D title. McKinzie, who was named Michigan's Miss Volleyball, will play at Virginia Tech. She played in 594 games for St. Philip and totaled 2,437 kills, 126 blocks and 352 aces.

OH - Briana Weber, Dike-New Hartford (Dike, Iowa), 5-9 Sophomore
Weber led Dike-New Hartford to a 45-0 season and the Iowa 2A state championship. Weber, who has committed to Northern Iowa, registered 511 kills and 43 aces in 2012.

OH - Sarah Wallace, Branson (Ross, Calif.), 5-10 Junior
Wallace led Branson to a 38-2 record and the California D-V state title. She recorded 477 kills, 319 digs, a 97.5 percent serving percentage (only eight errors on 290 serves) and 47 blocks.



OH - Kaitlyn Teeter, Friendship Christian (Lebanon, Tenn.), 6-2 Senior
Teeter recorded 711 Kills, 297 digs, 76 aces (402 serves at 96.5 percent) and 79 blocks in leading Friendship Christian to the Tennessee Class A championship. Teeter will play collegiately for Lipscomb.

OH - Devanne Sours, Tatum (N.M.), 6-2 Senior

Sours led Tatum to four straight state titles and was named New Mexico D1 Player of the Year. She will play at the University of New Mexico.

S/OH - Sarah Sponcil, Veritas Prep (Phoenix), 5-10 Junior
Sponcil led 28-4 Veritas Prep to the state title in Arizona's smallest division. She recorded 438 kills, 530 assists, 220 digs, 69 aces and 39 blocks. Sponcil had a hand in 89 percent of Veritas Prep's 1,091 kills this season. She is a two-time Arizona Small Schools Player of the Year and has committed to Loyola Marymount for hardwood and sand.

S - Heather Hook, Grundy Center (Iowa), 6-0 Senior
Hook led Grundy to a 35-7 season and amassed 980 assists, 232 digs, 74 blocks, 76 aces and 152 kills. She will play collegiately at Southern Iowa University.

S - Cammie Merten, Sacred Heart Prep (Atherton, Calif.), 5-9 Senior
Merten recorded 241 digs, 867 assists and 43 aces (93.8 percent on 276 serves) in leading Sacred Heart to the California finals.

AA - Michaela Mestl, Kearney Catholic (Neb.), 5-6 Senior
Mestl, a jack of all trades on a volleyball court, lead Kearney Catholic to a 36-0 season and a state C1 title. Mestl registered 280 kills, 53 aces (90 percent on 288 serves), 227 digs and 341 service receptions with only 10 errors. She will play at Wayne State. She is also a state track champion sprinter.



AA - Jo-Leigh Vervelde, Oostburg (Wis.), 5-10 Junior
Vervelde led Oostburg to a 44-4 record and its third D-3 state championship. She recorded 520 kills, 210 aces (93.5 percent on 626 serves), 371 digs, 801 assists and 113 blocks. With Vervelde doing a lot of everything, Oostburg won 115 games and lost 13.

MB - Laura Beach, Lutheran (Parker, Colo.), 6-0 Senior
Beach led the way as Lutheran went 28-0 and won Colorado's 2A championship. Beach, who has signed with Wyoming, recorded 43 aces, 296 kills, 140 blocks and 206 digs.

MB - Rachel Rogers, Warner (S.D.), 6-2 Senior
Rogers led the way to a 34-0 season as she registered 336 Kills, 50 aces, 71 blocks and 86 digs. For her four seasons at Warner, Rogers had 965 kills and helped Warner total a 122-5 record. In 2012, Warner won all 90 games it played in winning the state Class B title.

MH/MB - Riley Hanson, Nevis (Minn.), 6-0 Senior
In leading Nevis to a 26-9-1 record, Hanson recorded 609 kills, 98 aces, 283 digs and had 255 serve receptions. In college, she will play for Concordia/St. Paul.

MH - Samantha Meyers, Grundy Center (Iowa), 5-11 Senior
Meyers is Iowa's Class 1A Player of the Year after averaging 4.82 kills per set (511 kills), 47 aces (88 percent on 301 serves), 60 blocks, 359 digs and 702 serve receptions. She has committed to Drake.

OH - Abbey Bessler, St. Henry (Erlanger, Ky.), 6-2 Senior
Bessler recorded 508 kills, 62 aces, 267 digs, 41 blocks and committed only 10 errors with 338 service receptions as the Crusaders won 31 of 40 matches. She has signed with Xavier.



OH - Kellie Schmit, Kindred (N.D.), 5-11 Senior

Schmit led Kindred to the state semifinals and a 32-10 record. She totaled 637 Kills, 119 aces (88 percent on 415 serves), 276 digs, 119 blocks and had 580 serve receptions. She will attend the University of North Dakota.

OH - Virginia Pittman, Bayside Academy (Daphne, Ala.), 6-3 Senior
Pittman totaled 532 kills, 198 blocks, 209 digs and 120 aces (90 percent on 591 serves) in helping Bayside win its 11th-straight 3A state title. Bayside (62-2) won its final 60 matches. Pittman, who will attend Alabama, played on five Bayside title teams.

OH - Ellie Shannon, Sacred Heart Prep (Atherton, Calif.), 6-0 Senior
Shannon totaled 366 kills, 108 digs, 110 blocks and 95 percent serving (only five service errors). Sacred Heart finished the season 33-6 and as California D-IV runner-up.

OH - Tiffany Creamer, Landmark Christian (Fairburn, Ga.), 6-2 Senior
Creamer led Landmark to the Class A state title. For the season, Creamer totaled 632 kills, 157 aces (761 serves), 131 blocks, 175 assists and 460 digs.

S - Rachel Koop, Dike-New Hartford (Dike, Iowa), 5-10 Sophomore
Koop helped lead Dike-New Hartford to a 45-0 season and a 2A Iowa state title. The Northern Iowa commit recorded 1,155 assists, 129 digs and 43 aces.

S - Taylor Gustafson, Judge Memorial (Salt Lake City), 5-9 Junior
Gustafson led the nation with an average of 14.5 assists as she totaled 902 in leading Memorial to a 28-5 record. She also had a 92.8 percentage on 334 serves.



L/DS - Jennifer Miller, Wesleyan (Norcross, Ga.), 5-8 Senior
Miller led state runner-up Wesleyan to a 32-12 season as she totaled 528 digs, 75 assists and 82 aces. Miller will play college volleyball for Texas Christian.

AA - Ellie James, Bishop England (Charleston, S.C.), 5-8 Senior
James is a three-time South Carolina Class AA Player of the Year. She led Bishop England to its 13th-straight state title and an all-time high school record 23 state titles. James finished her four-year run with 226 aces, 747 digs, 286 blocks and 1,286 kills and four state titles. James was MVP in the recent South Carolina North-South All-Star game as well.

AA - Brooke Wolterstorff, Western Christian (Hull, Iowa), 5-11 Senior
Wolterstorff led Western to a 43-3 record and a state silver medal. She recorded 360 kills as a senior and has 1,500 lifetime. She won four gold medals in last year's state meet and was first team All-State in basketball in leading Western the Iowa state title. She will attend Dordt College.

MB - McKenzie Hayes, Tell City (Ind.), 6-1 Senior
Hayes finished her senior season much like her other three varsity years. She had 522 kills, 210 digs, 46 aces, 115 assists and 123 blocks. In four seasons, she totaled 2,153 kills and 412 blocks.

MH/MB - Sierra Hubbard Neil, St. Philip Catholic Central (Battle Creek, Mich.), 5-11 Junior
Niel recorded 450 Kills, 437 digs, 64 aces (95 percent on 460 attempts), 270 service receptions (13 errors) and 52 blocks as St. Philip won its seventh-straight state title.



MH/OH - Kara Stamper, Heritage Academy (Hagerstown, Md.), 6-1 Senior
Stamper led her team to the state tournament and a 29-2-1 record. She recorded 593 kills, 102 aces (90 percent), 94 blocks, 280 digs and had only 10 service errors on 157 receptions.

OH - Shealene Little, Culver (Ore.), 6-0 Sophomore
The state's most dominant 2A player, Little led Culver (26-5-1) to the Oregon 2A championship. She totaled 502 kills, 102 aces, 212 digs and had 18 blocks.

OH - Thelma Flores, Leon (Jewett, Texas), 5-11 Junior
Flores totaled 357 kills, 105 aces (552 serves), 42 blocks, 323 digs and 300 serve receptions to lead Leon (42-4) to the Texas 1A state title.

OH - Dani Eschweiler, St. Charles West (Mo.), 5-11 Senior
Eschweiler led St. Charles to a 27-4-1 record as she collected 490 kills (68.1 percent), 378 digs, 34 blocks and had only five service errors in 254 attempts (98 percent).

OH - Aubreigh Applegate, Wapahani (Selma, Ind.), 5-8 Senior
Applegate was a key as Wapahani captured the 2A championship. She collected 433 kills, 338 digs and 41 blocks. All four of Wapahani's losses were at the hands of much larger schools.

OH - Katie Staiger, Prestonwood Christian (Plano, Texas), 6-1 Senior
Staiger led Prestonwood to a 38-3 record and totaled 650 kills, 301 digs, 27 aces (94.5 percent on 392 serves), 35 blocks and 359 serve receptions. She will play for Baylor in 2013.

Holston led Sherwood to the state 4A title and a 19-0 record as she collected 370 kills, 47 blocks, 59 aces, 153 digs, and 163 serve receptions. Holston is the 2011 Maryland Gatorade State Player of the Year. She will attend Florida in 2013.

S - Gaby Steiner, Branson (Ross, Calif.), 5-8 Senior
Steiner totaled 770 assists, 184 digs, 49 aces (93.1 percent serving) as Branson won the California D-V title.

Chandler is the third member of the Bayside Academy team to earn A-A status. In helping Bayside to its 11th-straight state title, Chandler recorded 130 aces, 54 blocks, 205 digs and 1,465 assists. A starter as an eighth grader, Chandler earned her fourth state title and will be back in 2013.

DS/L - Rachel Fish, North Branch (Mich.), 5-7 Senior
Fish recorded 878 digs, 117 aces, 33 assists and 21 kills for North Branch this season.

AA - Rachel Holthaus, Winona (Mo.), 5-11 Sophomore
Holthaus led Winona to a 32-7 record while playing middle, outside hitter and setter. She had 395 kills, 33 aces, 94 blocks, 154 digs and 381 assists in 2012.

AA - McKenna Hollingsworth, Tri-City Christian (Vista, Calif.), 6-1 Junior

Hollingsworth led Tri-City to the California D-V finals. She totaled 358 kills, 150 assists, 51 aces, 38 blocks, 168 digs and had 202 serve receptions.



AA - Katherine Broussard, Metairie Park Country Day (La.), 5-7 Senior
In leading her team to the Louisiana D-5 state title, Broussard earned her fifth State Tournament MVP award and is a five-time All-State player. She totaled 382 kills, 62 aces, 31 blocks and 356 digs as CDHS was 40-6 on the season.
