Softball Game Preview: Herrin Tigers vs. Waltonville Spartans

The Herrin Tigers are taking a road trip to square off against the Waltonville Spartans at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Herrin is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.2 runs per game this season.

Last Saturday, Herrin was able to grind out a solid victory over Steeleville, taking the game 7-3.

Sophia Schramm spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned runs on five hits and racked up eight Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Madison Dickerson was incredible, going 2-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. The team also got some help courtesy of Reese Elliott, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-3.

Meanwhile, Waltonville fought the good fight in their extra-innings match against Mt. Vernon on Monday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Rams by a score of 10-8. The Spartans have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

The win got Herrin back to even at 4-4. As for Waltonville, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-2.

Herrin skirted past Waltonville 7-6 in their previous meeting back in March of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for Herrin since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
