Baseball Recap: Downers Grove South Takes a Loss

Downers Grove South had lost four straight on the road, but on Saturday they dropped their record down to 4-9 to make it five. They lost 10-4 to the Downers Grove North Trojans. The Mustangs were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Trojans apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in April of 2024.

As for Downers Grove North, the victory (which was their 15th in a row) raised their record to 15-1. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.9 runs over those games.

For Downers Grove North's part, they got a great performance from Nick Konopiots as he pitched six innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off eight hits. Konopiots has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Brady Schallmoser, who went 2-for-4 with four stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI. Jack Romsey also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.

Looking ahead, Downers Grove South will head out to challenge Berwyn/Cicero Morton at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Berwyn/Cicero Morton has struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 8.53 runs per game on average), something Downers Grove South will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Downers Grove North, they will look to defend their home field on Monday against Oak Park-River Forest at 4:30 p.m. The Huskies' pitching crew has only allowed 2.9 runs per game this season, so the Trojans' hitters will have their work cut out for them.
