Basketball Recap: Roma Comes Up Short

Roma was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They had to suffer through a 56-18 loss at the hands of the San Benito Greyhounds. While losing is never fun, the Gladiators can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 1130th, while the Greyhounds are ranked 357th).

Valeria Garza was Roma's leading scorer, having posted five points. Ayssa Rios held things down on the boards with nine rebounds.

San Benito found their leader in freshman Kalista Olivares, who went 6 of 11 on her way to 15 points and three steals. Olivares is trending in the right direction considering she's improved her point production for three straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Jade Maya, who posted eight points along with six assists and five steals.

Roma's defeat dropped their record down to 8-10. As for San Benito, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six contests, which provided a nice bump to their 15-7 record this season.

Roma didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 47-23 win against Juarez-Lincoln on the 10th. San Benito has also already played their next game, a 46-29 loss against Weslaco on the 10th.
