Baseball Recap: Fernando Rubio's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Guadalupe Centers over Van Horn

Guadalupe Centers had lost 11 straight at home dating back to last season, but on Thursday they dropped their record down to 0-8 to make it 12. They might be feeling deja-vu: they lost 23-3 to the Van Horn Falcons, which was the same score (and result) they got the week prior. If the Aztecs were looking for revenge after losing 15-0 to the Falcons when the teams met back in April of 2024, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Guadalupe Centers saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Fernando Rubio, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two stolen bases and one RBI. Those hits marked the first that Rubio has got this season. Another was Jaime Guillen, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one stolen base and one run.

As for Van Horn, the win got them back to even at 6-6. That 20 run margin sets a new team best for them this season.

On Van Horn's side, they let Antonio Bonomo and Brody Gray run wild. Bonomo got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI, while Gray went 1-for-2 with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Van Horn is undefeated when Bonomo posts two or more runs, but 2-6 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Gavin Stover, who got on base in all three of his plate appearances with three runs and one stolen base.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Guadalupe Centers will head out to face off against Central at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. The Blue Eagles have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 16 runs per game on average), something the Aztecs will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Van Horn, they are taking a road trip to square off against Summit Christian Academy at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Eagles will roll in looking for their 15th straight victory, something the Falcons surely won't give up without a fight.
