Basketball Game Preview: Roswell Coyotes vs. Mayfield Trojans

The Roswell Coyotes are taking a road trip to face off against the Mayfield Trojans at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.

Roswell is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of New Mexico's top teams: Carlsbad, who was ranked 17th at the time (Roswell was ranked 25th). Roswell fell 38-27 to Carlsbad on Tuesday. The Coyotes haven't had much luck with the Cavemen/Cavegirls recently, as the team has come up short the last four times they've met.

Meanwhile, Mayfield had already won 22 in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 17.9 points) and they went ahead and made it 23 on Friday. They came out on top against the Bulldawgs by a score of 51-42.

Mayfield's win came from a few key players Roswell will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Serena Carrasco, who shot 63% from the field to rack up 18 points. She continues to improve, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. Jazlene Ruiz was another key player, putting up nine points in addition to seven rebounds and three steals.

Mayfield's victory was their tenth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 24-3. As for Roswell, their defeat dropped their record down to 14-13.

Roswell came up short against Mayfield when the teams last played back in January, falling 41-30. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Ruiz, who almost dropped a double-double with 18 points and nine boards.
