Softball Preview: Colton Wildcats vs. Asotin Panthers
The Colton Wildcats will face off against the Asotin Panthers at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.
Colton can't be to happy about their upcoming road game considering what happened when they opened their season on the away from home on Wednesday. They fell just short of Dayton by a score of 9-8. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last four times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.
Colton got a big performance out of Kiya Soza, who went 2-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one run. Another player making a difference was Holly Heitstuman, who scored a run and stole four bases while going 2-for-4.
Meanwhile, it may have taken nine innings to finish the job, but Asotin ultimately got the result they hoped for on Wednesday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 14-12 win over Genesee. The Panthers' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
Georgia Schaefer and Kiera Nielson made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Schaefer pitched four innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off four hits. Meanwhile, Nielson didn't allow a single earned run over four innings pitched. At bat, Schaefer scored four runs and stole a base while going 2-for-5, while Nielson scored three runs while going 1-for-6. Schaefer also hit a triple, marking her first of the season.
In other batting news, Isabella Dougan was incredible, going 2-for-5 with one home run and three RBI. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April of 2024. Avery Triplett also deserves some recognition as she brought in her first RBI of the season.
Colton couldn't quite finish off Asotin in their previous matchup back in March of 2023 and fell 13-11. Can Colton avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
