Football Recap: JSerra Catholic Comes Up Short

JSerra Catholic extended their losing streak to five on Friday, dropping them down to 3-7. They were beaten by the Santa Margarita Eagles 41-14. Surprisingly, this marked the Lions' fourth straight game in which the away team has come away the victor.

Koa Smith-Mayall and Clark Cokley certainly did their best on Friday to avoid the loss. Smith-Mayall threw for 144 yards and one touchdown, while Cokley picked up 73 receiving yards and one TD.

As for Santa Margarita, they pushed their record up to 7-3 with the victory, which was their fifth straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 30.8 points over those games.

Leading Santa Margarita to victory were Trace Johnson and Jaion Smith. Johnson threw for 243 yards and a pair of touchdowns while completing 81.8% of his passes, while Smith rushed for 127 yards and one score. The dominant performance also gave Johnson a new career-high in passer rating (146.6).

JSerra Catholic does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Santa Margarita, after each having a week off, they and Sierra Canyon will shake off the rust and duke it out at 7:00 p.m. on the 14th. The two teams have allowed few points on average (the Eagles 13.6, the Trailblazers 4.3) so any points scored will be well earned.
