Softball Recap: Hazel Park Makes It Four in a Row at Home

Hazel Park won the last time they faced Fitzgerald and things went their way on Friday too. The Vikings blew past the Spartans 16-4. The result was nothing new for the Vikings, who have now won 11 matches by six runs or more so far this season.

Kathryn Chappell (2026) made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only two hits while striking out ten over five innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with three runs, one triple, and one RBI. That's the most hits she has posted since back in April.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on La'Onna Otis (2027), who went 2-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and four RBI. That's the most RBI she has posted over her last 11 games. The team also got some help courtesy of Camilla Polanco (2029), who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one triple, one stolen base, and two RBI.

Hazel Park kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits in seven consecutive contests.

Hazel Park's victory was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 11-10. Those home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 17.0 runs over those games. As for Fitzgerald, with the defeat, they broke their three-game winning streak and moved their record to 9-8.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Hazel Park will challenge Sterling Heights at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. The Vikings' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Stallions have averaged an impressive 11.2 runs per game this season. As for Fitzgerald, they will take on Cass Tech at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
