Baseball Recap: Maria Carrillo Takes a Loss

Maria Carrillo had lost three straight on the road, but on Friday they dropped their record down to 10-11 to make it four. They took a 6-2 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Ukiah Wildcats. Unfortunately, that's the fourth time they've come up short against the Wildcats this season, with their most recent loss being a 9-1 defeat on Wednesday.

Maria Carrillo saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Ben Stark, who went 1-for-3 with one RBI. Joseph Edwards-Phillips also deserves some recognition as he got his first hit of the season.

As for Ukiah, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matches. That's provided a massive bump to their 12-11 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.8 runs on average over those games.

On Ukiah's side, George Gibbs made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Gibbs has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with four RBI and one triple. He is becoming a predictor of Ukiah's success: when he posts at least three RBI the team is 3-1 (and 9-10 when he doesn't).

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Brayden Beebe, who went 3-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. Ukiah is 4-1 when Beebe posts two or more runs, but 8-10 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Davon Dockins, who went 1-for-3 with two runs.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Maria Carrillo will welcome Piner at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. The Prospectors will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more runs each contest than the last. As for Ukiah, they will look to defend their home field on Saturday against Vintage at 2:00 p.m.
