Softball Game Preview: Riverside Warriors vs. South Charleston Black Eagles

Riverside and South Charleston are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2019, but likely not for long. The Warriors will host the Black Eagles at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. The timing is sure in Riverside's favor as the team sits on three straight wins at home while South Charleston has been banged up by six consecutive losses on the road.

Riverside had to skate by with only a two-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the 15-run drubbing they dealt Princeton on Wednesday. The Warriors never let the Tigers get on the board and left with a 15-0 victory. The result was nothing new for the Warriors, who have now won eight matchups by seven runs or more so far this season.

Haylee Mullins was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and one double.

In other batting news, Riverside got a massive performance out of Shaylea Blackhurst, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Riley Smith, who scored three runs and stole a base while going 3-for-3.

Meanwhile, South Charleston fell victim to Hurricane and their airtight pitching crew on Wednesday. They came up short against the Redskins, falling 8-0. Having soared to a lofty ten runs in the game before, the Black Eagles' shutout was a dramatic turnaround.

Riverside has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 11-6 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.2 runs over those games. As for South Charleston, their defeat dropped their record down to 6-10.

Everything went Riverside's way against South Charleston in their previous matchup back in March, as Riverside made off with a 16-0 victory. Do the Warriors have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Black Eagles turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
