Senior guard led Douglass to its first state title, capping impressive career with 1,973 points.
Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in
high school basketball. America's source for high school sports continues
the tradition to close out the 2020-21 season by naming the top player in
each state. Selections are based on team success and individual
excellence, in addition to local and state accolades.
Pierre Brooks II of
Douglass (Detroit) is the 2020-21 MaxPreps Michigan High School Basketball Player of
the
Year. The 6-foot-6, 218-pound senior helped the Hurricanes go 17-5 en route to
the program's first state title.
Brooks averaged 33.4 points, 11.2 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 2.3 steals per outing as a senior, finishing his prep career with 1,973 points.
The Mr. Basketball finalist tallied 15 points, 11 rebounds, five assists, two blocks and two steals in the Hurricanes' 47-41 state title game victory over Tri-Unity Christian (Wyoming).
Signed with Michigan State, Brooks is regarded
as the No. 66 prospect in the Class of 2021 by 247Sports. He held additional college offers from Arizona State, Butler, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Missouri, Northwestern and Xavier.
Each
state's MaxPreps Player of the Year will be considered for inclusion in
the MaxPreps All-America Team, which is scheduled to be released April
