Softball Recap: Oscoda Gets the Win

Oscoda took a 15-run loss the last time they faced off against Houghton Lake, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Owls won by a run and slipped past the Bobcats 9-8. For the Owls, this counts as revenge for the 19-4 victory the Bobcats walked away with the last time they faced one another back in May of 2023.

Maryna Curley looked comfortable as she tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit.

At the plate, Oscoda let Ava Gooch and Luella Whipkey run wild. Gooch went 2-for-4 with five RBI, while Whipkey went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs. Those three hits gave Whipkey a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Josi Kellstrom, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.

Oscoda was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .452. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.

Oscoda has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-3 record this season. The team dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 9.8 runs. As for Houghton Lake, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 12-13.

Looking ahead, Oscoda will face off against St. Charles at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Houghton Lake, they will challenge Au Gres-Sims at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Wolverines have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 7.5 runs per game on average), something the Bobcats will no doubt try to take advantage of.
