Softball Recap: Willcox Snags Sixth Win in Last Eight Games

Willcox gave up the first runs on Tuesday, but they didn't let that get them down. They put the hurt on the Pima Roughriders with a sharp 12-2 victory. The Cowboys might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six contests by eight runs or more this season.

Alyssa Gonzalez made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out eight over six innings pitched. Those eight strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base and one RBI.

In other batting news, Willcox got a massive performance out of Janelle Vandermeulen, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 2-for-2. Those two stolen bases gave Vandermeulen a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Layla Donahue, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 3-for-4.

Willcox kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 17 hits. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their hit total in three consecutive matches.

Willcox has been performing well recently as they've won six of their last eight games. That's provided a nice bump to their 9-7 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.4 runs over those games. Pima's loss dropped their record down to 2-5.

Willcox has already played their next contest, a 17-16 victory against Morenci on the 27th. As for Pima, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next matchup, a 12-8 defeat against Chandler Prep on the 28th.
