Football Recap: Johnstown-Monroe Starts Season with Victory at Home

Johnstown-Monroe gave their fans exactly what they wanted out of a home opener on Friday. They took their matchup with ease, bagging a 70-26 victory over the Zanesville Blue Devils. The Johnnies pushed the score to 64-13 by the end of the third, a deficit the Blue Devils cut but never quite recovered from.

Ryan Sager had an outrageously good game as he rushed for 176 yards and three TDs on only nine carries. His longest rush was for an incredible 72 yards. Speaking of playmakers, who could forget Preston Carey, who went all the way with a kickoff return for a touchdown.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Johnstown-Monroe was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 428 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 208 rushing yards in 12 consecutive contests dating back to last season.

Johnstown-Monroe didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off four passes before the game was over. John Eckenrode led the group effort, picking up two of those interceptions all by himself. He got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Johnstown-Monroe will head out to challenge Centerburg at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Zanesville, they will venture away from home to face off against Clear Fork at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
