Baseball Recap: Van Takes a Loss

Van extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to 25 on Friday, dropping their season record down to 0-17 in the process. They came up short against the Calhoun Red Devils, falling 15-5. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Red Devils this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 21-1 back in March.

Easton Moore and Cade Price did some serious damage despite the final result: Moore got on base in three of his four plate appearances with three stolen bases and two runs, while Price went 3-for-4 with three RBI, one run, and one double.

As for Calhoun, they moved to 8-13 with that victory, which also ended their four-game losing streak. With that win, they brought their scoring average up to 6.2 runs per game.

On Calhoun's side, Chase Schoolcraft made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He struck out eight batters over six innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off six hits. Those eight strikeouts gave Schoolcraft a new career-high. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-4 with three stolen bases and one run. He is becoming a predictor of Calhoun's success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is 7-2 (and 1-11 when he doesn't).

In other batting news, Garrett Carpenter was a standout: he got on base in all five of his plate appearances with three runs and one RBI. Those three runs gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Orion Swearingen, who went 3-for-4 with one stolen base and two RBI.

Van has already played their next matchup (against River), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. As for Calhoun, they also didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next contest, an 11-6 loss against St. Joseph Central on the 26th.
