The Corinth Holders Pirates will square off against the Clayton Comets at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Corinth Holders is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.3 runs per game this season.
Clayton is facing Corinth Holders at the wrong time: Corinth Holders suffered their first home loss of the season on Tuesday and they're likely out for redemption. They came up short against the Rams, falling 11-2. Having soared to a lofty 17 runs in the game before, the Pirates couldn't push the score so high this time.
Ava Marks and Liana Giron did some serious damage despite the final result: Marks went a perfect 3-for-3 with one stolen base and one RBI, while Giron went 1-for-3 with one home run.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Clayton). They put the hurt on Southeast Raleigh with a sharp 18-2 victory on Friday. The win was familiar territory for the Comets, who have now won three matches in a row.
Mollie Smithson was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching three innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off three hits. Smithson was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with two RBI.
In other batting news, Autumn Joyce was a standout: she scored two runs and stole seven bases. Those seven stolen bases gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Maddie Sessions, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 2-for-3.
Clayton always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .559. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Southeast Raleigh only posted an OBP of .400.
Clayton's victory bumped their record up to 7-1. As for Corinth Holders, their defeat dropped their record down to 5-2.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Corinth Holders has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.3 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Clayton struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 9.8 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Corinth Holders took their win against Clayton in their previous matchup back in May of 2024 by a conclusive 11-4. Does Corinth Holders have another victory up their sleeve, or will Clayton turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
