Bishop Manogue had to travel to play their first game of the season, but the final result was worth the trip. They walked away with a 36-29 win over the McQueen Lancers on Friday. Winning may never get old, but the Miners sure are getting used to it with their ninth in a row dating back to last season.
Bishop Manogue had a senior duo take command as Brandon Mann threw for 199 yards and two touchdowns and Amir McGruder rushed for 90 yards and three TDs. 87 of Mann's passing yards were hauled in by Nate Simmons, who also brought in a receiving touchdown.
On the defensive side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to Bishop Manogue's defense and their seven sacks. The heavy lifting was done by Zeke Peterson and Marley Spuhler, who racked up six sacks between them. Spencer Schmitt was another major factor on D, forcing one fumble and making seven total tackles (2.0 for loss).
Several Lancers players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Nason Rodriguez, who rushed for 168 yards and one score while picking up 8.8 yards per carry. Rodriguez really tore up the turf during one magnificent 76-yard run. The team also got some help courtesy of Ryder Tucker, who threw for 200 yards and three touchdowns on only 18 passes.
Bishop Manogue and McQueen should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps Nevada Rankings. The Miners (ranked fourth) will meet St. Mary's (ranked 38th) at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, McQueen will square off against Union Mine at 7:30 p.m. on Friday with a big rank advantage (24 vs. 399).
