Basketball Recap: Stone Takes a Loss

Stone blew Collins out of the water the last time the pair played, but on Tuesday Collins got their revenge. The Tomcats fell just short of the Tigers by a score of 64-62. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their prior game on Saturday (59), the Tomcats still had to take the loss.

Despite the loss, Stone still got an impressive performance from Cleon Johnson Jr., who shot 62% from the field en route to 18 points along with seven boards and seven steals. Johnson Jr. has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last four times he's played. Another player making a difference was Lathan Posey, who went 6-for-11 on his way to 13 points and seven rebounds.

Collins' victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Tywon Barnes, who shot 67% from the field to rack up 17 points and eight boards. Those eight rebounds gave Barnes a new career-high. Cayden Allen was another key player, putting up 13 points and five boards.

This is the second loss in a row for Stone and nudges their season record down to 2-4. Those defeats can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 60.5 points over those games. As for Collins, they now have a winning record of 2-1.

Coming up, Stone will challenge Pearl River Central at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Collins, they will have some time to savor their win since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Mendenhall at 7:30 p.m. on December 2.
