Football Preview: Concord Bears vs. Mt. Diablo Red Devils
After each having a week off, the Concord Bears and the Mt. Diablo Red Devils will dust off their jerseys to face off against one another at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Concord will be looking to extend their current four-game winning streak.
Last Friday, Concord was able to grind out a solid victory over Encinal, taking the game 29-22. With that win, the Bears brought their scoring average up to 26 points per game.
Jayden Reger continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, rushing for 276 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 9.5 yards per carry. With that strong performance, he is now averaging an impressive 125.7 rushing yards per game. The team also got some help courtesy of Juan Gonzalez, who threw for 105 yards and a touchdown.
Concord was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 327 rushing yards. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 95.7 rushing yards per game earlier this season, but in their last three matchups they've averaged 243.3.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Mt. Diablo). They were the clear victor by a 55-32 margin over Castlemont last Friday. Winning may never get old, but the Red Devils sure are getting used to it with their third in a row.
Concord's victory ended a five-game drought at home dating back to last season and bumped them up to 4-2. As for Mt. Diablo, their win bumped their record up to an identical 4-2.
Concord might still be hurting after the 48-26 loss they got from Mt. Diablo when the teams last played back in October of 2023. Thankfully for Concord, Herschel Turner Jr (who rushed for 300 yards and four touchdowns on only 14 carries) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result?
