Football Recap: Whitwell Tigers vs. Huntland Hornets
Whitwell unfortunately couldn't capitalize on their home-field advantage in their season opener. They took a 24-14 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Huntland Hornets on Friday. The Tigers were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Hornets apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in August of 2024.
Whitwell lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Adam McDougal, who picked up 112 receiving yards and one TD. He also put in work on the defensive side of the ball, forcing one fumble, making four total tackles, and defending one pass.
Leading Huntland to victory were Grant Jernigan and Bryant Mooney. Jernigan rushed for 115 yards and one touchdown on only eight carries, while Mooney rushed for 115 yards and one score on only 13 carries. Jernigan got the majority of those rushing yards when he took off on a run that went for an incredible 65 yards.
Coming up, Whitwell will square off against Bledsoe County at 8:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Huntland, they will face off against Forrest on Friday.
