Weslaco East proved they can win big on Thursday (they won by seven) and on Tuesday they proved they can win the close ones too. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 6-4 victory over Mercedes. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Wildcats have posted since February 18th.
Aubrey Zuniga spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and two unearned) runs on seven hits.
On the hitting side, Weslaco East's victory was truly a team effort as eight different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Sarai Gonzalez, who scored a run while going 2-for-2. That's the most hits Gonzalez has posted since back in February. Angelica Herrera was another, going 3-for-4 with one RBI.
Weslaco East was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .406. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .333 or higher in seven consecutive matches.
Meanwhile, Harlingen South entered their tilt with Pace on Tuesday with four consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with five. They put the hurt on the Vikings with a sharp 15-1 win. The result was nothing new for the Hawks, who have now won ten games by six runs or more so far this season.
Lexi Sandoval and Kailee Silva made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Sandoval struck out nine batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit (and not a single walk). Meanwhile, Silva tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in nine consecutive appearances. At the plate, Sandoval scored three runs and stole a base while going 1-for-3, while Silva went a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs, two doubles, and one triple. That triple marked the first that Silva hit this season.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Jaylin Mata, who went 3-for-4 with two triples, two runs, and one stolen base. She is on a roll when it comes to triples, as she's now hit at least one in each of the last three games she's played. Kara Jensen also deserves some recognition as she hit her first triple of the season.
Weslaco East's record is now 14-2. As for Harlingen South, their record now sits at 12-4.
Friday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Weslaco East hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .418. However, it's not like Harlingen South struggles in that department as they've averaged .349. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Weslaco East might still be hurting after the 10-3 defeat they got from Harlingen South in their previous matchup back in February. Can Weslaco East avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
