Basketball Recap: Lumberton Starts Season with Win Against Fairmont

Lumberton had to kick off their season on the road on Friday, but they showed no ill effects. They took down the Fairmont Golden Tornadoes 61-42. The game was the first time the Pirates have beaten the Golden Tornadoes on their court since December 16, 2022.

Leading Lumberton to victory were Nate Lawson and Kaden McLean. Lawson went 6-for-9 on his way to 15 points and four steals, while McLean shot 42% from the field en route to 13 points in addition to six boards and three steals. Those three steals gave McLean a new career-high. Amare Jones was another key player, shooting 83% from the field to rack up 12 points.

Fairmont's loss came despite strong showings from Jacob McCollum and Ayden Cummings. McCollum posted 12 points and six rebounds, while Cummings had seven points along with six assists and three steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Jason Hayes, who scored seven points.

Fairmont has already played their next game, a 62-55 victory against Purnell Swett on the 18th. Hopefully Lumberton paid attention to the Golden Tornadoes' contest: the next time they hit the field, they'll take on the Golden Tornadoes at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
